Elmer Belfast

Elmer the Patchwork Elephant is coming to Belfast!

From the 27th June 2022, Belfast City will be brought to life by a herd of uniquely decorated, amazingly creative, elephant sculptures. The free, family-friendly art trail – a collaboration between Northern Ireland Hospice, Wild in Art and Andersen Press, brings David McKee’s popular children’s character Elmer the Patchwork Elephant to life.

The uniquely decorated Elmer’s will be positioned around key landmarks, streets, and open spaces in Belfast for ten weeks until Sunday 4th September. But that’s not the end…after this the herd will travel around Northern Ireland. The Elmers will be stopping off for the weekend to say “Hello” in Ballymena, Derry/Londonderry, Newry and Enniskillen before coming back to Belfast for a final farewell event!

Help us make Elmer’s Big Belfast Trail a ‘Mammoth’ one!

There are a huge and diverse range of opportunities for you to get involved with Elmer’s Big Belfast Trail and help to maximise its positive impact across Northern Ireland and for Northern Ireland Hospice.

See below the main ways you can get involved:

We have an exciting range of sponsorship opportunities available, allowing businesses large and small to participate.  The art trail presents a mass participation and large-scale sponsorship opportunity unlike any other in Northern Ireland.

We are looking for local artists, designers and illustrators to create inspiring and engaging artwork that really helps our Elmer sculptures look their magnificent best.  Whatever your artistic style and approach, we look forward to embarking on the creative journey with you. As a sponsor, you will get to choose which design you would like for your individual sculpture from our shortlist.

Schools and community groups will also join in the fun, adopting and designing their own ‘Young Elmer’ sculptures, while taking part in a province-wide, once-in-a-lifetime discovery and learning programme.

Would you like to get involved as a volunteer, and help make this event really successful? By being an Elmer Trailmaker, you will be supporting Northern Ireland Hospice, helping to showcase Belfast and Northern Ireland and meet lots of interesting people. Volunteering allows you to make new friends, work in a team, gain new experiences and enjoy a sense of purpose whilst hopefully having fun too!

Elmer’s Big Belfast Trail needs a range of volunteers including help with moving sculptures, ticket collecting at events, marshalling, and cleaning sculptures to name but a few!

Fundraise for Northern Ireland Hospice

There are lots of fun & exciting ways you can help fundraise for Northern Ireland Hospice and play your role in the overall success of Elmer’s Big Belfast Trail. You can help raise funds in a number of ways, by participating in one of our key events or campaigns, organising your own event, donating and shopping in our shops, setting up a regular gift or even think about leaving us a gift in your will.

After the Trail has ended the Elmer Sculptures will raise vital funds for Northern Ireland hospice and support the delivery of care in local communities across Northern Ireland.

Follow the trail and Join the Conversation

The easiest way to participate is to simply follow the trail. More exciting information on our trail will be coming soon. The Trail map will be revealed in early 2022.
