Sandbrook Nursery joins Elmer’s Learning Herd for Big Belfast Art Trail

Sandbrook Nursery is the first school to join Northern Ireland Hospice for Elmer’s Big Belfast Trail, which will see a herd of uniquely-decorated Elmer sculptures, based on David McKee’s beloved book character, popping up around town in June.

Sandbrook Nursery is the first school to join Northern Ireland Hospice for Elmer’s Big Belfast Trail, which will see a herd of uniquely-decorated Elmer sculptures, based on David McKee’s beloved book character, popping up around town in June.

Sandbrook’s pupils are now excitedly looking forward to decorating their own colourful Elmer elephant as part of an amazing learning programme, ‘Elmer’s Learning Herd’, which celebrates diversity and inclusivity.

Schools receive a blank Young Elmer sculpture to decorate and a learning programme resource pack linked to the curriculum, to help teachers stimulate young minds to be inspired, get creative and enjoy lots of fun-filled hands-on activities.

Sandbrook Nursery Principal Lee-Anne Cromie said: “Elmer has always been an important part of nursery life and we could not think of a better way to celebrate Elmer than to raise money for such a worthwhile cause as NI Children’s Hospice.

“The children and their families will enjoy taking part in many unique and fun fundraising events and will hopefully raise a great amount for the charity. The opportunity to design our own special unique Elmer was just too good to miss. We are very excited and really looking forward to our Elmer journey!”

Mary McCall, Director of Fundraising and Communications at Northern Ireland Hospice, said: “The Elmer’s Big Belfast Trail will be an elephant-astic opportunity for family-friendly fun and a celebration of the essential work that Hospice does across the community.

“We have launched ‘Elmer’s Learning Herd’ as a programme specifically for schools and I can’t wait to see the creative designs that the children at Sandbrook Nursery come up with!”

NI Hospice now want other schools to join the fun of Elmer’s Big Belfast Trail, which is organised in partnership with Wild in Art and Andersen Press.

Schools who sign up for the learning programme receive a blank Young Elmer sculpture to decorate and a curriculum-linked resource pack to help teachers inspire young minds to get creative and enjoy lots of fun-filled hands-on activities.
