Mayor completes charity skydive in aid of NI Children’s Hospice
Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, Councillor Oliver McMullan, has successfully completed a charity skydive in aid of Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice, marking a memorable and fitting finale to his year as Mayor.
On Sunday 24 May, the Mayor took part in the “Skydive for NI Hospice” fundraising event at Skydive Ireland near Garvagh, leaping from 15,000 feet and reaching freefall speeds of up to 120mph in support of the charity that has been his chosen cause throughout his mayoral year.
The challenge was undertaken to help raise awareness and vital funds for Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice, the only service of its kind in Northern Ireland, which provides specialist care and support to babies, children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions, as well as their families.

Reflecting on the experience, Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, Councillor Oliver McMullan said: “Completing the skydive was an unforgettable experience and certainly a unique way to round off my year as Mayor.
“While it was nerve-wracking stepping out of the plane, I knew throughout that it was all for an incredibly worthwhile cause. Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice holds a very special place in my heart, and I wanted to finish my mayoral year by doing something that would not only challenge me personally, but also help shine a light on the outstanding work carried out by the Hospice every day.
“The care, compassion and support provided to children and families by the Hospice team is truly extraordinary, and I am proud to have supported the charity throughout my term as Mayor.
“I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has donated, shared messages of support, and encouraged me throughout this challenge. The generosity shown by residents, local businesses and community organisations across Causeway Coast and Glens has been greatly appreciated.”
NI Hospice Fundraising Relationship Manager David Dixon said: “Many thanks to the Mayor for undertaking this daredevil skydive, and to all those who have supported his fundraising. It’s a spectacular way to lead in to our Purple Month in June, celebrating 25 years of care at Children’s Hospice.
“We rely heavily on public fundraising and donations to continue delivering our Children's services, which cost approximately £5.3 million each year to operate, with only 38.5% funded by government. This support is very welcome so that we can continue providing specialist nursing, family support, short breaks, symptom management and precious moments of joy for local children with complex needs, and their families.”
Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice cares for more than 370 babies, children and young people each year through its dedicated children’s inpatient unit, Horizon House, as well as through specialist nursing support delivered within local communities.
