Deputy Lord Mayor names Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice as Charity of the Year

Deputy Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Paul Doherty, has chosen Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice as his Charity of the Year. Following a visit to Horizon House, he praised the team’s compassion and commitment to supporting children and families across Northern Ireland.

Deputy Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Paul Doherty, has announced that he has chosen the Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice as his Charity of the Year.

The announcement follows Councillor Doherty’s visit to Horizon House, the Children’s Hospice in Belfast, where he met with staff, children and families, and learned more about the services provided.

Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice is the only service of its kind in Northern Ireland, providing specialist palliative care to babies, children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions. Care is provided both in the In-Patient Unit at Horizon House and in family homes across Northern Ireland through the Hospice’s community nursing and Hospice at Home teams.

Paul Doherty, Deputy Lord Mayor of Belfast said:
“It was an absolute privilege to visit Horizon House and to see first-hand the incredible work being carried out by the Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice team. I was deeply moved by the compassion and dedication shown to the children and families they support.

“Choosing the Children’s Hospice as my Charity of the Year was an easy decision. The difference they make to families across Northern Ireland is truly inspiring and I look forward to working with them over the coming year to raise awareness and vital funds for their services.”

Trevor McCartney, Chief Executive of Northern Ireland Hospice, said:
“We are honoured that Deputy Lord Mayor Paul Doherty has chosen the Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice as his Charity of the Year. His support will make a real difference in helping us continue to provide essential care for children and families right across Northern Ireland.

“It is expected to cost £5.26 million to run our Children’s Hospice services in 2026, with more than 60 per cent of that needing to be raised annually from community support. Every penny raised stays in Northern Ireland to support local children and families.

“We are very much looking forward to working with the Deputy Lord Mayor in the months ahead to raise awareness of our work and to help ensure that every child and family who needs our care can continue to receive it.”

Last year Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice cared for 333 babies, children and their families, supporting 233 children with supported short breaks at Horizon House and provided over 6,000 hours of care to 52 children and their families in their own homes. Every penny raised through partnerships like this helps Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice continue to provide vital, specialist care and support to children and families across Northern Ireland.
